How to make your phone sound an alarm if someone moves it

You leave your phone charging on a café table while you order, on a hotel nightstand, or on your desk in a shared office while you step out for a minute. Most of the time nothing happens, but you still feel uneasy walking away from it. You would like to know right away if someone picks it up or pulls it off the charger. Carrying it everywhere, even to the coffee machine, gets tiring fast.

01Why the usual way fails

Phones have tracking features for after a phone is lost, but they do not warn you at the moment someone touches it. Screen locks protect your data, not the device itself. Generic alarm apps often trigger on small vibrations, like someone bumping the table, so you stop trusting them. And many security apps ask for location, camera and microphone access, which is more than you want to hand over for a simple alert.

02How MotionGuard helps

MotionGuard is a motion alarm for Android that you arm before stepping away. It watches for movement during the session and can sound a local alarm if the phone is moved. You choose a settle delay so placing the phone does not trigger it, and a sensitivity test lets you check how it reacts first. With Pro, it can also watch for the charger being removed and send a best-effort alert to a paired Wear OS watch.

03Step by step

  1. Place the phone where you will leave it, on a desk, charger or nightstand.
  2. Run the sensitivity test to see how the phone reacts to movement.
  3. Choose a settle delay, tap Arm, and let the phone settle.
  4. Walk away; if the phone is moved, it sounds a local alarm.
  5. Disarm from the app or the ongoing notification when you are back, and check the trigger history if something happened.

04Tips

  • Pick a stable surface. A wobbly café table or a busy shared desk can cause bumps, so test the sensitivity on that exact spot before you arm the alarm.
  • If the phone is charging, use the charger removal alert. With Pro, MotionGuard can also watch for the cable being pulled when the phone was on power at arm time.
  • Pair a Wear OS watch if you walk out of earshot. The watch can show the latest status and, with Pro, get a best-effort wrist alert, though delivery depends on the connection.
  • Know what it is for. It is an alert, not a theft lock or a tracker, so keep your usual screen lock and find-my-device settings turned on as well.
