How to read raw Japanese manga in English

A new chapter of the series you follow just came out in Japan, and the English version will take weeks. You open the raw pages, and the art tells you half the story while the speech bubbles stay a mystery. You try a phone camera translator on one bubble at a time, and by page five you have lost track of who said what. You just want to read the chapter today, in order, with the dialogue where it belongs.

The short answer

Mee Manga Translator works on the page image itself. You upload raw pages or a whole chapter, it finds the text in each bubble, translates it to English and writes the English back into the same spot, so the art stays as it was.

01Why the usual way fails

Manga text is hard for general translation tools. Japanese is often written top to bottom inside small bubbles, with stylized fonts, sound effects drawn into the art and honorifics that change meaning. A camera app reads one block at a time and drops the text in a separate box, so you keep switching between the page and the translation. Copying text by hand is slow, and scans with low contrast or uneven quality make the letters harder to pick up. Fan translations of popular series can take days or weeks, and less known titles may never get one at all.

02How Manga Translator helps

Mee Manga Translator works on the page image itself. You upload raw pages or a whole chapter, it finds the text in each bubble, translates it to English and writes the English back into the same spot, so the art stays as it was. It reads vertical Japanese and also handles Korean and Chinese comics. When it is done you can preview the pages and download them one by one or as a ZIP. It also keeps line breaks clean on long webtoon pages, so the dialogue stays easy to follow when you scroll.

“It accurately recognizes top-to-bottom Japanese writing commonly found in manga speech bubbles and narration boxes, then outputs natural horizontal English text.”

“It detects text regions and panel structure, then renders translated text with matching size and placement while leaving the artwork intact.”

03Step by step

  1. Open the translator on the site and choose English as the target language.
  2. Upload the raw pages as JPG, PNG or WEBP, or upload a ZIP for a full chapter.
  3. Click Translate and wait while it detects and translates the text in each bubble.
  4. Preview the translated pages with the original layout.
  5. Download single pages, or the whole chapter as a ZIP to read in order.

04Tips

  • Translate a whole chapter at once instead of page by page. Names and terms stay more consistent when the pages are processed together.
  • Check the file sizes before you upload. Each image has to stay under the size limit, so very large scans may need to be saved at a lower quality first.
  • Try it on a single page before a big batch. The free plan gives you a small number of credits to see how your series comes out.
  • Read the machine version as a fast draft. For a series you love, the official English release is still worth buying when it comes out.
  • Use clear, high quality scans when you can. Text that is blurry or very low contrast is harder to read for any tool, so a better source page usually gives a better translation.
