How to log gym sets when your phone has no signal

Your gym is in a basement, the signal is gone by the second step, and your workout app is still spinning when you want to log a set. You wait, you give up, and you tell yourself you will fill it in later. Later rarely happens. If your log depends on a connection, the gyms with the worst signal are the ones where you lose the most data.

The short answer

FlexLog logs on the device you are holding. On the watch, core logging works with no phone nearby and no internet, and there is no account to sign in to.

Why the usual way fails

Many fitness apps save to a server first and show you the result after, so no signal means no save, or a save you can't trust. Some need an account and a login check before they open. Others keep the real data on the phone and treat the watch as a remote control, so the watch is useless once the phone is out of range. None of that is a problem at home on wifi, which is why it is easy to miss until you are standing under a squat rack with a dead bar of signal.

How FlexLog helps

FlexLog logs on the device you are holding. On the watch, core logging works with no phone nearby and no internet, and there is no account to sign in to. Your sets are written to the watch as you log them, so a dead signal changes nothing about your session. If you also use the phone app, it keeps its own log on the phone, again without needing a connection.

Step by step

  1. Install FlexLog on your Wear OS watch before you get to the gym.
  2. Leave the phone in your bag or locker if you like, the watch does not need it to log.
  3. Start a workout on the watch and log each set as you finish it.
  4. Pause or switch exercises during the session, all on the watch.
  5. Review the finished workout on the watch once you are done.

Tips

  • Set up your routine at home first. Building a template takes a few taps, and it is nicer to do that on the couch than between warm-up sets. On the day, you only press start.
  • Know where your data lives. Logs stay on the device where you created them and there is no FlexLog cloud, so the watch is your record. Treat it like a notebook you carry, not like an online account.
  • If you log on your phone instead, export the journal now and then. The phone app can save its log to a JSON file, which gives you a copy you control if the phone gets lost or replaced.
  • Turn on rest countdowns so you are not reaching for a phone clock either. The watch can count down after each set and buzz when it is time to go again, on watches that support it.
