Why the usual way fails
Most gym logs live on the phone, so the phone has to stay within reach for the whole session. Watch companions often make it worse, because many of them only show what the phone sends and stop working when the two lose contact. Gyms in basements or large buildings also have weak signal, which breaks anything that needs to talk to a server before it saves. So the log ends up depending on the one device you were trying to put down. And every time you pick the phone up to save a set, there is a good chance a message or a feed keeps you there longer than the rest break.
How FlexLog helps
FlexLog's watch app logs on its own. The core logging on a Wear OS watch works without a phone connection and does not need an account or internet, so the phone can stay in the locker. Sets, reps and weights are stored on the watch where you record them. If you later want to see recent watch workouts on the phone, an optional connection shows them there as read-only summaries. During the session the watch handles the parts you would normally reach for the phone to do. A rest countdown runs between sets with supported haptic cues, you can switch exercises when a station is taken, and you can pause and resume if someone stops to talk. Because there is no developer-hosted cloud, nothing waits on a server before it saves, which is also why weak signal in the gym does not matter.
“Core watch workout logging works without a phone connection.”
“Workout logs are stored on the device where they are created, and core logging does not require an internet connection.”
Step by step
- Install FlexLog on your Wear OS watch.
- Set up a template for the routine you usually do.
- Leave the phone in your bag and start the workout from the watch.
- Log each set and let the rest countdown run.
- Check your history on the watch after the session.
- Install the phone app too if you want recent watch summaries on the phone.
Tips
- Build your template the night before, when you have time to think, so the watch already knows the plan in the gym.
- Remember that the free watch history covers the last seven days. If you want to look back further on the watch, that comes with Pro.
- Haptic cues on the rest countdown mean you do not have to keep looking at the screen to know when to start the next set.
- If you want a written record outside the watch, note your top set of the day somewhere you keep long term.
